Red brick facade of the Lewis Steel Building, a converted 1930s steel factory in Williamsburg

The 1930s Steel Factory

In the 1930s, 76 North 4th Street was a steel factory: a handsome building with a dark red brick facade, spanning the entire block on North 4th Street, from Berry Street to Wythe Avenue, in what was then a manufacturing neighborhood that drew hard-working New Yorkers.

Adaptive Reuse

Today it is the Lewis Steel Building, 83 individually unique loft apartments. The renovation is thoroughly modern, with stainless steel appliances and a Bosch washer/dryer in every apartment, and the building is LEED Silver certified, designed to use less water and energy.

What Remains Today

The factory never really left. Massive factory-sized casement windows, exposed brick, and original cast-iron details (steel beams, piping, and radiators) are left uncovered on purpose. Most ceilings soar 12 feet or more. Walk through the lobby, with its Arabesque tile and vintage safe, and the building’s past is still in plain sight.
